Kaitlin and I just watched a movie on Netflix instant called Ink. Without any exaggeration, I can say that it is the most emotionally powerful movie I think I've ever seen. It had many, many similarities to movies like Mirrormask and What Dreams May Come, and most definitely a lot of similar themes shared with Gaiman's Sandman series of comies and stories. Seriously, if you liked any of those things, check this movie out. It's from 2009, and currently available streaming via Netflix.
Goddamn that was a fucking amazing film. |

| Seeking some Burning Wheel assistance |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|08:07 am] |
I'm trying to write up a new Emotional Attribute for Changelings (a race from the Palladium Fantasy setting). Any Burning Wheel fans here, I ask for some assistance.
Paranoia is an attribute that acts as a self-fulfilling prophetic doom. With Paranoia, as the years pass the Changeling grows more and more distrustful of the very people he tries to blend with. Mirroring the universal fears within the populace that any could be "one of them," the changeling's own fears that anyone could oust him at any time steadily increases. At the height of his Paranoia, they are dangerous, unpredictable recluses; the fear of being discovered has ironically turned him into the very baby-stealing monster that everyone fears.
I like the description of it, now I just need to put it into mechanics. The three main things to work out are the Initial Questions (which determine the character's starting exponent in the attribute), the situational tests for advancement, and a mechanic that allows the player to call upon the attribute for in-game assistance.
Initial Questons
Paranoia starts at Exponent Zero. Since changelings use the same lifepaths as Men, I think that it would make sense to increase it +1 for each Peasant or Villager lifepath, possibly even Outcast lifepaths too. Those lifepaths would expose the changeling to more "backwards" mentality, and thus they'd probably experience a lot more of the "everybody hates us" attitudes there.
Tests for Advancement
Ugh. I have no idea. Any suggestions?
Using Paranoia
Hm. Must come back to these later.
This is a "work in progress" post. I'll fill more in as I think of it. |
